The Victorians knew how to ‘souvenir with style’!

It’s that time of year, when Christmas (when was that?) and New Year are distant memories, and our thoughts turn to holidays and warmer climes.

For me, Scotland and/or the Lake District are my default destinations, but it doesn’t stop me considering the amazing ski slopes of Canada and North America, or dreaming about snorkelling in the Mediterranean – sigh!

The Victorians were renowned travellers and explorers; I think everyone has heard of Livingstone and Stanley’s forays into Africa, and perhaps the lesser known Speke, who in 1858 named the largest lake in Africa, Lake Victoria (how imaginative eh?).
Victorians lucky enough to travel beyond the shores of the British Isles , returned with souvenirs reflecting the North African and Western Asian influence.

This influence extended to jewellery design, artwork and architecture. Orientalism even made it as far as a functional cigarette case! Other cigarette cases, such as those crafted by the collectable silversmith Nathaniel Mills depicted scenes closer to home, such as famous buildings like St Pauls Cathedral.

Pietra dura pieces, intricate mosaic items and cameo brooches were often purchased as meaningful souvenirs of a Grand European Tour.

So although we have our modern technology, digital photography, Twitter and mobiles, via which we share our holiday experiences, I wonder, if our holiday ‘memorabilia’ will last the test of time in the same way as the souvenirs of our Victorian predecessors.

AC Silver Top Tips on Collecting Silver

The last couple of years have seen an increase in the number of people collecting silver, this is probably down to the stock market and its poor performance causing a reduction in pension value to almost nothing - and don’t even mention property investment to me ! I think the majority of the country (me included) are in negative equity due to the plummet in house prices.

On the plus side however, such problems in the economy have encouraged people to open their minds and consider other avenues for investment. So what would be the benefit of investing in silver you may ask?

Where to begin when considering collecting antique silver

We receive requests from customers who are looking for that single silver item which is going to not only hold its worth, but increase in value over time. At AC Silver, Andrew Campbell has been dealing in antique silver since the mid 1970’s and is certainly happy to share his expertise.

Here are a few considerations that should be taken take into account when contemplating collecting silver:-

Condition of the item

The most desirable items will be in good condition, which means they should be neither damaged nor repaired.

At AC Silver we will send out an item on request, to allow the customer to physically touch, feel and inspect the piece at leisure. If you come across dealers who won’t do this then be very careful. With such items as teapots for example, c the rims, joints, handles and spouts should be checked. Reputable dealers should identify any slight dings & scratches to the piece prior to purchase.

Silver identification marks

These marks should be easy to find and can provide specific information pertaining to each individual piece. Although like me you may struggle to see hallmarks on some highly chased items, a magnifying glass may prove useful!.

All British silver should display the following marks:

a – Maker's Mark
b – Assay Mark
c – Date Letter
d – The Sterling Mark
e – The Duty Mark

There are many people who come to us with silver items they believe to be made in sterling silver, and by a certain maker; often this is not the case. Gaining an understanding of these marks is crucial if you want to collect and invest in silver.

If a piece of silver is made by a famous or desirable maker then there is a higher chance it will keep its worth. I myself get bamboozled by the number or British silversmiths there are to choose from so I thought I would provide you with details of a select few:-

History of Silver: Tea Sets and Services

Introducing the Sterling Silver Tea Set / Service

Tea. Something I perhaps won't take so much for granted after writing this blog post. What could be more luxurious than sipping afternoon tea from a sterling silver tea set? Sitting down at the table to pour yourself a piping hot cup of morning brew. As I've said before in an earlier blog post, Mr Campbell always insists that if you drink ANY beverage from a silver drinking vessel you'll taste the difference (borrowing a phrase from a well-known supermarket there, perhaps!). Tea services normally consist of a teapot, cream jug and a sugar bowl, however there have been larger sets created.

Tea as a Luxury

It is difficult for me to comprehend the fact that a simple cup of tea was once an expensive luxury! I can't believe that tea leaves were once the subject of many illegal smuggling operations and even murders were committed to protect the organisations illegally importing the now so common beverage. The British East India Company, one of the most powerful commercial organisations ever, introduced the drink to Britain. They imposed high taxes on tea, which meant that it was not readily available to the less wealthy citizens, and of course this lead to smuggling or illegal importing, until William Pitt the Younger became Prime Minister in 1783 and greatly reduced the tax on tea so dramatically that smuggling of the item became virtually pointless. All this for what we think of now as a simple cuppa!

Tea Services in History

It is believed that the first sterling silver tea service was used in around 1790, 7 years after tea became more widely available in Britain. Early tea sets were miniature in comparison to the ones we use today, as the beverage was certainly a commodity and was drunk in small amounts. Teapots and tea sets grew in size during the era of King George II as the public's taste for tea blossomed.

Tea Sets and Art

As the public's demand for tea services grew, merchants designed extravagant pieces that one would be proud to display in their homes (not like the 'World's Number 1 Dad!' mugs we have now, then?) which of course incurred substantial costs. The trays on which sets were served on, were often made from a less precious metal, decorated with only a sterling silver border. It is widely known that Queen Victoria absolutely adored her afternoon teas, and merchants vied for the Queen's approval of their products. Many of the pieces created around her era are the most collectable ones out there today.

There's some food for thought next time you sit down for a nice cup of tea, the simple beverage that has a not-so-simple history!

Introducting the January Birthstone

Can you believe 2011 is over already? What are your New Year's resoultions? Mine is to stop saying 'yes' each time Rachel offers me a coffee, I'm becoming addicted to the stuff! Some of you may also be celebrating a birthday this month, or have friends and relatives who were born in January. The perfect present could be an item of their own birthstone, garnet. The garnet gemstone is said to be metaphysically linked to commitment, regeneration, insight and removing negativity, all of which are useful qualities to behold when starting afresh in the year of 2012.

The Colour of Garnet

Most of us associate the stone garnet with the colour red. There are many types of red garnet, 'anthil', a bright red colour, 'Malayan' garnet which is orange, 'rhodolite' which is bright pink, to name a few. However, garnet can also be found in many different shades. The stones that are bright green in colour are called 'demantoid' garnets, and are extremely rare and priceless. The gem can also be found in yellow, brown, purple, black and colourless. The meaning of the colour red can be rage, passion, or in China red is the symbol of fire, and carries a large positive connotation as it is associated with courage, success and happiness.

Garnet, or Pomegranite?

The name "garnet" comes from the Middle English word "gernet" which meant 'dark red', as well as from the Latin "granatus" which could be a reference to "pomum granatum" or 'pomegranite', a plant which bears vivid red fruit which are in fact a similar size and shape to garnet crystals. I hope this information is helpful in deciding on a gift, or even just as a small snippet of facts about garnet that may be useful sometime in the future. I'm off to the supermarket for lunch now, as I have a sudden craving for pomegranites.

Diamond Donations

Ladies all over America have been dropping generous donations into the iconic Salvation Army red kettle collection pots. Last week an anonymous woman dropped a diamond engagement ring worth £1250 into a pot in Miami, Florida. The week previous, another diamond engagement ring was dropped in to a pot in North Carolina, following a diamond ring worth another £1250 deposited at a kettle in the supermarket Walmart, in Kansas earlier this month.

Spare a Thought This Christmas

The note which accompanied last week’s diamond ring simply read ‘They need more than I. Do good!’ signed ‘A friend’. The generous donations are a great symbol of Christmas spirit, a time when the Salvation Army really needs a boost in support to provide those in need with warm meals this Christmas. It certainly has made me think about how lucky I am, and what I can do to help this Christmas. Even if I can’t deposit a diamond ring, I know every penny which goes to that charity will be greatly appreciated.

Christmas Competition, X Factor to lose again?

The Battle Over Christmas

Swords are drawn as Christmas approaches, the traditional battle to be top of the charts this week rages on. In a repeat attempt to topple the usual X Factor Christmas single, the music fan who supported Rage Against The Machine's single "Killing In The Name" to number one in 2009, beating X Factor's Joe Mcelderry, has publicised the re-release of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" in the hopes that the public will vote against this year's X Factor winners, Little Mix.

The X Factor Overthrow

X Factor claimed Christmas number one for 4 years running from 2005-2008, before being knocked off its pedestal in 2009 by Rage Against the Machine, then returning in 2010 with Matt Cardle's "When We Collide". The glamorous 'Little Mix' girls were this year’s hopefuls, but X factor isn't the only competition they have this year.

Stiff Competition

Along with Little Mix, Nirvana have to compete against the music single produced by the Military Wives, spouse of servicemen currently fighting for Britain, with their single "Wherever You Are". It has become the fastest selling single in 6 years, flying off the shelves (or out of iTunes is a more appropriate phrase) at a ratio of 100:1 versus Little Mix's single "Cannonball".

Great Tastes

I wish I could say I was born in a year of great music, but as the Christmas number one in 1993 was Mr Blobby with "Mr Blobby", I'm quite glad that I was only 3 months old. The only year that possibly comes close to that amount of cheese is the millennium, with Bob the Builder's chart topping 2000 single "Can We Fix It?". I personally hope that the Military Wives go to number one this year. Their cause is a great one and all of the proceeds are going to charity. Spare a thought for them and their partners, and of course anyone whose spouse are out fighting this Christmas.

An AC Silver Update

As many of you may have noticed, we've recently had a facelift here at AC Silver. No, I don't mean plastic surgery, (though I did recently dye my hair brown, and ended up walking around with a tangerine coloured mop on my head. At least it matched the AC Silver company colours, eh?) I was referring to the modernisation of our website, www.acsilver.co.uk.

We've upgraded!

In the hopes that the website would become more aesthetically pleasing, we've added a lovely new orange and grey modern 'skin' to the site. All of those roaming SOLD items have been moved into their own, easy to locate category which can be found at the top left, above the main list of categories. If you spot anything in the newly formed 'sold' section that you're interested in, let us know and we'll do our best to locate a similar item for you.

Our HTML Queen, Rachel, has been beavering away with our help & information pages in order to make them more user friendly. Our Online Marketing Manager, Gemma, has also been helping with her diverse range of skills to kick the stubborn pages into formatting submission! Sarah, Jane and I have been holding fort, keeping operations running as smoothly as possible (and supplying Mr Campbell with a fresh peppermint tea every so often).

Lights, Camera, Action!

After many "ACTION!"s and "CUT!!"s, we managed to get the ball rolling with regards to adding videos to our website. After 48 takes (well maybe I'm exaggerating a LITTLE bit...) Mr Campbell finally managed to condense all of the information he wanted to share with the world into a three minute long video, which you can view here. We're in the process of including videos for every item of jewellery, in order to display our stock in the most realistic a way as possible. The 'still' pictures just don't do them justice!

For Your Viewing Pleasure

With the success of our jewellery videos, we'll soon be rolling out short clips of our silver stock as well, hopefully with a little personal description from Mr Campbell him self, in the hopes that customers will realise our items aren't just any old pieces of silver, but part of one of the best collections of antique and vintage silver pieces out there! Girl with the Pearl Necklace

Liz Taylor... movie star, style icon, glamorous... that's pretty much all I knew about Dame Elizabeth until this week. That isn't me being ignorant, unfortunately I wasn't born early enough to properly appreciate the inspiration that she was.

13^th December 2011, Elizabeth Taylor’s 16^th century ruby and diamond mounted pearl necklace sells at auction for £7.6 million. Previously owned by Mary Tudor, and two Spanish queens, the piece was purchased for Dame Elizabeth in 1969 by her twice married, twice divorced husband Richard Burton, for £23,800. The pearl, named ‘La Peregrina’, or ‘The Pilgrim’ in English, is one of the largest perfectly symmetrical pear-shaped pearls in the world, originally weighing a whopping 224g.

The Creation of a Perfect Pearl

Pearls are formed inside the shell of almost any species of mollusc, as a defence mechanism against a potentially threatening irritant such as a parasite inside its shell, or an attack from outside, injuring the mantle tissue. The mollusc creates a sac to seal off the irritation, sealing it with layers and layers of calcium carbonate, thus forming a pearl. The first artificial pearl is said to have been created in 1656, by a French rosary-bead maker, by coating gypsum pellets with a mixture of fish scales and varnish. Yummy! Pearl jewellery is a personal favourite of mine. It can be dressed up, dressed down, a statement piece in a classic outfit or paired with an evening dress for a touch of elegance.

Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend

Among items sold at the auction were Elizabeth's 33.19 carat diamond solitaire for £5.7 million, and an ivory and gold necklace which fetched more than 100 times the predicted price at £203,000. Elizabeth Taylor was known for her obsession with diamonds, us girls here at AC Silver can only dream about having a collection as amazing and elegant as hers, but we can pretend while we're trying on the beautiful pieces that Mr Campbell purchases for the shop!

Maker of the Month: Paul Storr

It is only since working at AC Silver that I am becoming familiar with the many silversmiths among our collection, however one man I keep hearing a lot of good words about, is a gentleman named Paul Storr.

Paul Storr was an English silversmith, sculptor, and designer working during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. His work ranged from simple silverware such as tea pots, salt pots and candlesticks, to larger table ornaments such as sculptures and soup tureens. He was also commissioned to create sculptural pieces for royal goldsmiths.

Cheaper by the Dozen

Paul was lucky enough to marry a childhood friend, Elizabeth Beyer, in 1801. He fathered 10 children who proceeded to give him an astonishing 54 grand children! He retired in 1838 to Tooting, London, until his death in March 1844. His pieces have become highly sought after and collectable, and are considered to be great investment pieces. I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!

Bugs. I hate bugs. Creepy crawly ones, ones with wings, and the ones with millions of legs. They just freak me out. I can’t stand them. Any AC Silver member will tell you, if so much as a woodlouse is spotted in our office I am ouutttaaa there. Much like the celebrities on that silly program about being stuck in the jungle for a month.

The Bug Factor and the X Factor

I hate ‘I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here’ almost as much as I hate bugs. Well, that’s not really true, but I seriously don’t like it. My Facebook feed is flooded with cries about how this person shouldn’t go, how it’s an outrage that they didn’t kick this person out. Maybe it’s just because I have little interest in celebrities and who is ‘in’ these days, but I don’t recognise 4/5 people who took part in the 2011 series. There is Dougie from McFly, who by law I have to know, being a young girl who grew up in the millennium, and a lady who I vaguely recognise from something like the X Factor (don’t even get me started on that).

Wasps for Brunch

I don’t understand the attraction of watching ANYONE being stuck in a tiny box surrounded by wasps and tarantulas. Especially celebrities that I perhaps like. Oh it makes me shiver at the thought of it! Wasps for brunch, scorpions for supper? No thank you!

Mud Pie for Tea

Maybe I’m just ranting because I don’t understand the aim of spending a month amongst wet leaves, eating the mud off my shoes and the leaves from the trees because they’re the only things for dinner that didn’t once have six legs. Don’t get me wrong, I love camping, but that’s probably because I am a technology addict and I love all sorts of gadgets that you can get these days. Self heating mugs, self inflating mattresses, self constructing tents… well maybe one day.

Beetlejuice

I definitely don’t intend to eat bugs or drink beetle juice any time in the near future, however Mr Campbell is always insisting that drinks taste one hundred times better when drunk from a silver cup (I’m not sure ANYTHING could make beetle juice taste better). ‘I’m a Celebrity’ could definitely be made classy if they served their scorpion tails and millipede legs from a silver tureen instead of the bland iron pots and pans they use currently.

Even if you don’t plan on eating insects from a silver bowl this Christmas, we may have something in stock that would serve as a lovely present for a loved one or a friend. All I know is that, whatever I am drinking this Christmas, it'll certainly taste better if served in a silver goblet presented on a silver waiter, however I know it certainly won’t be beetle juice!

The History of Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is now observed on the fourth Thursday in November (in the USA, Canada celebrates on the second Monday in October), to celebrate the end of the harvest, however the date of celebration has varied over the decades. It is said that the festivities originated back in the 17th century when a group of pilgrims treacherous journey from England to the travelled the USA, suffering from dreadful ailments such as scurvy and exposure. Only half of the 102 pilgrims survived their first year in Plymouth, Massachusetts, but the ones who lived shared an autumn feast in celebration of their first harvest since arriving in the 'New World'.

Thanksgiving Traditions

Giant golden birds on silver platters, bowls of carrots and corn, big silver jugs of grandma's best lumpy gravy and a huge pot of pumpkin soup. Thanksgiving is an important holiday for many Americans and it is said that as many as 100 million families across the USA will be gathering today for a feast, and more importantly to give thanks and praise for their meal. Today, President Barack Obama has gone beyond the presidential tradition of 'pardoning' a turkey (saving it from becoming part of the feast) and spared a second bird, naming the fowl "Peace" and "Liberty". A small gesture that has an extremely significant meaning.

Maker(s) of the Month: The Langlands

With the upcoming launch of the new acsilver.co.uk website, the team have been passing around fresh ideas for our weekly blog. One of the suggestions, a 'Maker of the Month' section, gave us some exciting ideas. I hereby introduce you to the first 'Maker of the Month' blog post!

The Langlands are a renowned family of silversmiths who operated of out Dean Street in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, England, for around 60 years. Their family included John Langlands I and his son, John Langlands II. Later Dorothy Langlands, the wife of John Langlands II, would also take part in the business.

John I

As apprentices of the famous silversmith Isaac Cookson, John Langlands I and John Goodrick took over Cookson's business and continued to manufacture a moderate range of silverware upon his death. After the death of Goodrick in 1757, John Langlands took up a partnership with John Robertson I until two years after Langlands death when the partnership was dissolved.

John II

Langlands' son, John Langlands II, took ownership of his father's business and continued to produce a high level of silverware until his death in 1804.

As John Langlands II's widow, Dorothy maintained a flourishing business for ten years after her husband's death, until she took retirement in 1814.

Female Silversmiths

Women often began working in their fathers workshops from a young age, usually until marriage. Upon marriage, the woman's individual identity would be lost in a partnership with her husband, until his death. As a widow, she would have the opportunity to use her own mark, and succeed her husband in the business.

November is here, and as the icy weather begins to redden our noses and ears, we have to find warmth from other elements than the weather. As the poem suggests, the birthstone of November is topaz. The topaz stands for loyalty, friendship and happiness, representing the warmth we find in our friends and family when the weather turns cold.

The History of the Topaz

Topaz can be found in a variety of colours, this its history is difficult to track. At one point it was believed that topaz was first found on the ancient island of "Topazos", however the stone in question is now thought to have been a different gemstone of a similar colour to that of amber coloured topaz. Many modern English translations of the Bible mention topaz in reference to a stone in the Hoshen (a sacred breastplate worn by the High Priest of the Israelites in ancient times): "And thou shalt set in it settings of stones, even four rows of stones: the first row shall be a sardius, a topaz, and a carbuncle (Garnet to us): this shall be the first row."

All Hallows' Eve

Halloween. The annual excuse for dressing up, and becoming someone (or something!) other than yourself for the night. The traditions of pumpkin carving, bobbing for apples, horror movies, playing pranks and creeping around haunted houses have become fond favourites for many. And although we Brits don’t take the holiday quite so seriously as our American cousins, we are catching up!

Jack o’lanterns have sprung up across Britain bringing an eerie, supernatural feeling to homes. Of course this admiration for the unnatural is nothing new. During the Victorian era there was a revival in Gothic styles of silverware design. Encouraged as a throwback to the middle ages, which were dubbed the golden era as the predecessor to industrialization. These designs incorporated gothic style masks and motifs into Rococo style pieces creating ‘Regency gothic’.

The Rugby World Cup 2011

I write this fresh from the Rugby World Cup final. And, as predicted by many, the All Blacks have sent the French packing by narrowly securing a win on home soil. After 6 years of planning, and 47 matches played in front of crowds surpassing 1.4 million; months of training, tactics and sheer determination to be the best in the world have amounted to one thing… The Webb Ellis cup… or the RWC trophy to you and I.

Named after William Webb Ellis, hailed as the creator of rugby this silver gilt trophy weighs 145 troy ounces and is fitted with 2 cast silver scrolling handles. There are two Webb Ellis cups, which are used interchangeably. The original made by Carrington & Co, London in 1906 and a replica made in 1986, which will be the cup held by New Zealand until they are challenged in 2015.

Where does the idea behind the trophy come from?

The origins behind a two- handled cup being used as a trophy as fairly hazy and no definite explanation has been established however, one of the most plausible theories stems from the battlefield. Where soldiers would retain a token from their enemies armour, an item of their kit (ie a cup!) or perhaps the odd body part as tangible proof of victory.

What is the Arts and Crafts movement?

The Arts and Crafts movement flourished between 1860 and 1910, it originated in Britain and was pioneered by some of the most prolific Victorian artists and writers of the Victorian era including, and probably most notably, William Morris.

The movement stemmed from and was largely influenced by Morris’ personal doctrine regarding social, political and economic ideals. He believed that Art, whatever its form should reflect cultural and moral standing. The impact of the industrial revolution had increased the amount of machinery used in production thus, diminishing the demand for skilled craftsmen.

Morris’s design philosophy was anti-industrial advocating traditional craftsmanship in order to protect rural handicrafts. The movement was accepted widely and between 1895 and 1905 over hundred local Arts and Crafts organisations were formed throughout England.

Recognising Arts and Crafts traits...

Morris himself designed and made decorative objects form the home including wallpaper, textiles and furniture however, the movement far transcended these boundaries to silverware, architecture and glassware. The pieces of Arts and Crafts can be characterised by the use of traditional, medieval, romantic of folk styles of decoration reflecting the revival of traditional methods in production.
Pieces of Arts and Crafts silverware generally remain fairly simple with minimal embellishments without superfluous decoration however; any designs that are used usually reflect the flora and fauna of the British countryside. In order to emphasis the more organic nature of this movement some pieces were deliberately left unfinished, resulting in rustic, robust effect.

From Russia With Love...

When one thinks of Russian high society, it conjures scenes of unapologetic wealth and glamour. From the historically lavish Tsars, to the jet-setting billionaire oligarchs the Russians know how to do ‘flashing the cash’ with style.

Therefore, it perhaps comes as no surprise that some of the most coveted and collectable pieces of silver originate from Russian soil (specifically, most likely Moscow or St Petersburg). Russian silver is both elaborate and elegant with an emphasis on attention to detail. Pieces can be characterized by the popular use of enamel inlayed into the silver to create intricate, brightly coloured designs.
It was a tsar, Peter the Great (obviously a modest chap then…!) that introduced standardized silver hallmarking to Russian in 1700. This restricted silversmiths to four standard purities. Today, Russian hallmarks bear five touch marks; the Makers mark, the Assayers mark, the Silver Standard mark, the City mark and the Kokoschnik mark.

What's got the Fashionista's buzzing?

Recently I briefly touched upon one of the key jewellery trends for autumn/winter and after meticulously wading through no less than five heavy-duty fashion publications another common theme quickly became apparent. The consensus of the fashpack is clear; there is a real buzz about jewellery this season. Literally. Insects are in! From dragonflies to spiders, bees to butterflies, these little critters will be adorning wrists and necklines throughout the fashion world.

One thing I must make clear is that these are not the gothic styles usually associated with this organic theme, these jewellery pieces feature creepy crawlies: the pretty version. Perhaps a slight oxymoron in the way that some of the worlds most ostracised creatures are metamorphosed into glamorous accessories.

Before I get underway with this blog, I have to give credit to its inspiration! Earlier this week a beautiful little girl was born to two very proud parents. Probably not too far out of the ordinary. But the parents of this lovely little girl are two of my good friends and its fair to say upon first meeting, she is a perfect little bundle of joy.

I think it goes without saying that any new arrival is cause for excitement and of course, celebration to mark the occasion. In the Christian faith, as with many religions, a ceremony is held to welcome to newborn into the faith. It has become tradition in order to emphasise the importance of the birth those close to the child would present him or her with gifts. This practise is believed to derive from the wise men presenting their gifts to the baby Jesus, and in a similar notion in modern society these presents are supposed to represent an initial investment for the child’s future.

Over the years the type of gift offered has altered from that of purely monetary value to material presents with an intrinsic value. Perhaps not surprising that it was the ever-elaborate Victorians who first popularised the notion of gifting sterling silver.

How to care for these rocks that you’ve got…

There are very few things better than owning a beautiful piece of jewellery, especially if that item is one you have lusted over before making the purchase (or better still being presented with in a gift box!!). So it goes without saying that once you have these jewels in your possession you will want to wear them whilst they look at their gleaming best. Gemstones can be a teeny bit tricky to keep in perfect condition, especially with regular wear and dirt can soon build up causing your stones to lose their shine and appear dull- definitely not the desired effect! So here are a few hints for maintaining your treasured pieces…

Diamonds

Diamonds are pretty tough (one of the many reasons why they are so popular) and can either be cleaned professionally in an Ultrasonic cleaner or at home using a soft bristled brush, warm water and fairy liquid. Simple, but the difference it makes is incredible!

Rubies & Sapphires

Whilst these stones are still fairly durable it is best to avoid using a brush when cleaning and opt for a soft cloth to wipe over.

Emeralds

As with Rubies and Sapphires it is advised with Emeralds to wipe the stone with a cloth however, only cool/room temperature water should be used as any detergents can damage the oils inside the stone.

Pearls and Opals

As these are so soft and delicate, they require very careful cleaning. It is advised not to use any cleaning products and simply wipe over pearls with a damp or dry cloth to maintain their lustre.

Not only are you lucky lot known to be the most intellectual of all the zodiac signs, to possess excellent artistic qualities and demonstrate compassion and understanding but you have the privilege of claiming Sapphire as your birthstone.

As one of the most popular Gemstones used in Jewellery, Sapphires are renowned for their deep intense blue colour but can pretty much be found in any hue dependent on the intensity of iron, titanium and chromium levels present. The only exception being red, which would be considered a Ruby.

Sapphires can be formed both naturally and synthetically, the natural sapphire sediments can be found in Eastern Australia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, East Africa and areas of North America including Montana. Synthetic Sapphires are often frowned upon and rejected by jewellers however, the remarkable strength of this gemstone means it can be utilised in scientific instruments and movement bearings in wristwatches!

It’s not even officially September yet, but my coffee table is already buckling under the weight of several September magazine issues. These colossal issues, easily mistaken for the Yellow pages, are the most important in the fashion publication calendar. Elle, Vogue, Harpers, InStyle, you name it they are all there, each a making a declaration to the tone of ‘out with the old, and in with the new’, fast forwarding to autumn season and ushering in its new trends.

Apparently, give it a couple of months and we will all be wearing block colours, pencil heels and chunky jewellery…. You see this is one of the things I love the most about fashion: The irony. Every season there is a new ‘IT’ item, ‘new trend’, but in reality we are on a constant loop. A Picture Tells A Thousand Words...

Recently, at a family reunion, after the lunch and the small talk, as four generations of our family gathered round the discussion inevitably reverted to reminiscing about the times gone by and toasting those that were absent. Cue: the unleashing of the family photo albums and scores of black and white portraits, wedding pictures and toothless toddlers grinning at the camera.

After all the cringing and howls of laughter had died down and the album was safely stowed away I got to thinking about the importance of photographs. Since the photograph was invented in the late 1800’s they have become a significant and accurate way of documenting our lives.

The photographs that fill our homes hold our memories and they will demonstrate to those in the generations to come who we were, what we did and our misjudgements in fashion…!One of the joys after coming home from a holiday/ wedding/christening is developing the pictures and, while they may not be worthy of Testino those snaps can certainly tell some stories…well they do say picture says a thousand words!

Gringotts, Galleons and Goblets

I will be the first to admit that I am slightly behind the times with this one, but after the final instalment of the Harry Potter films has spent weeks smashing box office records left, right and centre I finally managed to get my act together to go and see it. As I emerged from the cinema after tears, tragedy and triumphs and an emotional goodbye to my favourite set of characters, one scene in particularly resonated with me- and it’s not the one you might think…!

I was intrigued by the scene inside Gringotts (that’s the wizarding bank for those of you not up to speed on your Harry Potter knowledge….!) in particular, inside the vault of Bellatrix Lestrange. Now understandably not a stereotypical choice for a role model (likes to throw the odd deadly curse, possesses an evil cackle and a set of teeth that would make any dentist squirm) But take one look into her vault at Gringotts and you realise this woman isn’t so daft. A veritable Aladdin’s cave of Silver Goblets, Cups, Candelabras, Bowls- you name it, it was there. Whilst I understand this is merely a fictional tale and the century’s of heirlooms piled high were probably imitations on loan from the Warner Brothers prop department it definitely struck a chord on the value of purchasing antique silver for investment purposes.

Although as with all investments nothing is guaranteed, both antique silver and jewellery are likely to retain their monetary value over time and are renowned for generating a significant return on investment. Art Nouveau

A few months ago, I blogged about the Art Deco movement, and as we are never one to do things in the traditional manner here at AC Silver I felt it was perhaps time to look at the movement that preceded it; Art Nouveau. Simply translated to mean New Art, this movement was particularly popular in pre-world war one Europe, but in hindsight it its clear it had a significant influence on global design.

In the UK Art Nouveau developed from the Arts and Crafts movement, it was seen as fresh and new with its organic style, and although fashions progressed and it was eventually replaced by the more angular Art Deco designs, Art Nouveau is recognised as an important transitionial period between the historicism of neoclassicism and modernism.

The style is characterised by its flowing curvilinear forms and organic inspired embellishment especially floral and plant inspired motifs. Just like its successor the influence of the movement is visible throughout all elements of global design, in paintings, ceramics, glass, silver and perhaps most notably, architecture. Some of the most prominent examples of Art Nouveau design can be seen throughout pre- war buildings in Europe such as the Paris metro system where the arches, doors and decorative mouldings showcase the movement at its best- despite the subway probably being one of the last places you would expect to see great design!!

Of course, jewellery was also heavily influenced by the Art Nouveau style and as with other areas of design the craftsmen utilised the modern technological advancements of the era to create their pieces. These were less likely to contain precious stones, which only drove the popularity of the movement as pieces were more affordable and therefore increasingly accessible to a wider audience.

La Fete Nationale

At AC Silver we are admirers of all things French, so when we realised that the 14th of July is a national holiday in France, despite being overwhelmingly jealous (a mid week bank holiday! Hurumph!) We felt it necessary to do a little bit of research and find out what its all about- you never know, us Brits could be entitled too…

Or perhaps not.

Turns out July 14th is Bastille Day, yes there were concerts and grand balls, speeches and holidays, fireworks and parades but unfortunately we will have to leave them to the Champs Elysees as the day commemorates the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille Fortress in 1789. As French history goes, this was pretty significant as it symbolised the rallying of the people and the catalyst for the constitutional monarchy, which proceeded the first republic after the French revolution cue: the guillotine working overtime.
All very nice, (if a bit gory), but what does this have to do with silver?! I’m getting there- Trust me!

So, all this was occurring during the reign of Louis XVI, (who despite being the king of France, was probably better know as the spouse of Marie Antoinette- she of great extravagance and controversy) and while he was busy being usurped in France, over at this side of the channel the nobility were getting a tad jittery at the unrest in Europe.

Despite all this political uncertainty, this period of the 18th and early 19th century produced some of the finest examples of silver and the trade was at its peak, with many more English assay offices in existence than we see today. Earlier this week the USA was in patriotic party spirits as Americans celebrated the independence day holiday weekend. Aside from commemorating the signing of the declaration of independence from the United Kingdom in 1776 the fourth of July is a celebration of what it means to be an American and the opportunity to be patriotic. As the Star-Spangled Banner rang triumphantly many Americans took to parades, fairs, concerts, barbeques and firework displays to enjoy the long weekend.

Mirror, Mirror in my hand, who is the fairest in the land?

OK so, I'm sure you are all perfectly familiar with the concept of a mirror… but just in case ‘a mirror reflects light in a way that preserves much of its original quality prior to contact with the mirror’. Making them an essential component to personal grooming, if not everyday modern life and interior design.

The earliest forms of Mirrors date back to 6000BC when ancient civilisations used mirrors crafted from polished stone, bronze, tin, copper and volcanic glass. Clearly vanity wasn't something that the Ancient Greeks overlooked! However, mirrors were very difficult to produce and therefore were generally only owned by the wealthy.

Way before Alice fell through the looking glass the rarity and mystery of mirrors led to the evolving legends and superstitions. During the middle ages when they were heavily associated with witchcraft and were believed to be the reflection of the soul and hold mystical powers enabling spells to be performed.

Probably the most common superstition associated with mirrors (and one I will never risk) is that someone who breaks a mirror will receive seven years of bad luck as the mirror is believed to reflect part of the soul. Therefore, breaking a mirror will fragment the soul. Heavy stuff!

Finally, it is said that mirrors cannot lie and the reflection will only show the truth (Which personally I think, is possibly scarier than any of the other myths and superstitions!). The mere mention of the 1920’s conjures up images of Great Gatsby- esque glamour; flappers, the hedonistic indulgences of the golden era and of course, the birth of Art Deco style of design which began in Paris in the roaring twenties and flourished internationally throughout the 1930’s.
A distinct departure from the asymmetrical curves of the previous Art Nouveau style, Art Deco was widely considered to be an eclectic form of elegant and stylish modernism. The versatile style was incorporated into all areas of design including architecture, interiors, fashion, painting and jewellery.
The structure of Art Deco design is based on mathematical geometric shapes and it drew inspiration from ancient Egyptian and Aztec work, reflecting the advances in foriegn travel and historical discoveries being made at the time. However, unlike many design movementsn of the era the intention of Art Deco was purely for decoration and it held no origins in political or philosophical ideals.

Art Deco experienced a decline in popularity during the late 1930s and early 1940s as the world was once again back at war. At its best Art Deco represented glamour, functionality and modernity. Today, it represents similar connotations of prosperity, elegance and style, most notably in the landmarks that make up New York's famous skyline including the Empire State Building, Chrysler building and Rockerfeller center.
Aside from architechture, antique pieces of silver and jewellery have stood the test of time, only improving with age over the decades, as would be expected of the Art Deco period these pieces are characterised by their angular design and clean lines. The nation was struck by its first hit of tennis fever this past weekend as on Sunday afternoon people up and down the country (myself included) were glued to their television to watch Rodger Federer suffering a defeat at the hands of his constant rival, Rafael Nadal. As anyone who follows the tennis circuit will know, these extremely talented players permanently stand head and shoulders above the competition, and as the season gathers momentum, the buzz seems to focus entirely on these two (minus the odd muffled whisper whether this could be Murray’s year), and who will be the overall victor, scooping the title of World No 1.

With Wimbledon just a few weeks away our thoughts have turned to strawberries and cream, Murray Mound (or Henman Hill to the purists) and for how long the inevitable rain will stop play. Another certainity is that the Williams sisters will be set to dominate the womens ccompetition, both on court and in the style stakes. Always one to make a statement Serena Williams is known for sporting some serious jewellery when she steps out on centre court; most notably (though perhaps unsurprisingly) diamond tennis bracelets.

A Girls Best Friend

This week, I am dedicating the blog to a woman whose extensive jewellery collection comprised of some of the most impressive pieces of jewellery and rarest stones in the world, Ms Elizabeth Taylor. Sadly, the actress passed away earlier this year but she leaves behind a legacy of glamour and extravagance. As a woman who simply did not believe in being understated, even as her health deteriorated she was never seen without her jewellery.

Taylor's private life was the fuel for many a media scandal, she was married eight times, with the most famous and most extravagant additions to her jewellery collection gifted to her by Richard Burton whom she married twice, firstly in 1964 and then again in 1975. Burton bought Elizabeth several well-known pieces during their marriages, two of the most famous being the 33.19 carat Krupp diamond, which Taylor wore on a daily basis, and the 69.42 carat pear cut Taylor-Burton diamond Burton justified these lavish gifts as investments, which certainly paid off for Taylor who sold the 69.42 carat diamond after their second divorce for $5 million!

Her passion for jewellery did not begin and end with diamonds, in 1969 Burton purchased the 50 Carat La Peregrina Pearl as a Valentines present for Taylor. The pearl, first discovered in 1513 had previously been owned by Mary I and was set into a necklace of pearls, rubies and diamonds by Cartier.
Throughout her turbulent personal life, Taylors adoration of fabulous and unique jewellery remained constant, famously stating that"You can't cry on a diamond's shoulder, and diamonds won't keep you warm at night, but they're sure fun when the sun shines".

So strong was Taylor's dedication to her first love that in 2003 she published a book titled ‘My love affair with Jewellery’. After her death in March, her jewellery collection reportedly worth around $150 million, will be sold at auction at Christies later this year. In the meantime, we can all pay our own tribute to a woman of great personal strength and impeccable taste. Whether you are attending a dinner with the Prince of Monaco, a star-studded premiere or dashing out on the school run don’t be afraid to pop on the biggest jewels you can find, and wear them with pride!

As much as the weather is trying its hardest to prove us otherwise we are, believe it or not, in the midst of British summertime! And with the arrival of summer comes the season of celebratory social events, graduations, christenings and of course, weddings. For some reason at this time of year my diary goes into overdrive. Crests vs Coats

Being in the antique silver business, we regularly come across fine silver pieces engraved with crests and elaborate coats of arms. And, although we always try our upmost to identify the origins of the individual crest I feel it’s time to get to know a little bit about the background of heraldry itself.

So, here goes, first things first… Crests vs. Coats?

The heraldry profession that encompasses both crests and coats of arms originated in the middle ages when those that participated in combat were required to wear certain images or symbols to distinguish themselves whilst their faces were hidden by helmets.

Over the years the two terms have begun to be used interchangeably to mean the same thing, however, the two concepts though related are quite different. The coat of arms refers to the entire heraldic achievement whereas the crest refers to just a single component. A coat of arms generally includes a shield as a battle reference and several accessory elements including a crest, a motto, a coronet, a helm and supporters, as shown above in the crest of William Wales.

Unlike a crest which can be transferred throughout different generations and branches of the same family the coat of arms belongs to the individual and is considered legal property to be passed from father to son. Don’t worry, wives and daughters sometimes get a look in, but generally their coats of arms only portray their relation to the original bearer. As women were not involved in battle their coat of arms would not bear a shield and alternatively would be shown on a lozenge, an oval or a cartouche.

A coat of arms can include a short phrase, known as an armorial motto intended to inspire or describe the motivation of the person or corporation. Motto's usually feature on a scroll underneath the shield and can be in any language, though usually Latin or the bearers native tongue.

The crest is a key accessory to the full heraldic achievement, positioned above the helm when included in the full coat of arms. It is typical for pieces of antique silver to only feature the crest as the full coat of arms was reserved for larger, elaborate ceremonial items. In this instance, when the crest is not accompanied by a coat of arms it is likely to be shown above a twisted band (shown to the right), a coronet or a cap. Family crests usually include animals or human figures shown bearing weapons, as symbols of bravery and strength.

So where does that leave us today? In modern society heraldic symbols are still a display of both national and personal heritages. However, unlike its origins heraldry is no longer used as an expression of aristocracy, rather as a tool to create and reinforce an identity for nations, their subdivisions and institutions such as churches, universities and schools.

This week is the anniversary of William Shakespeare’s Birth (Happy 447th Birthday Shakes!). Granted, the man needs no introduction but just in case... In his lifetime Shakespeare wrote some of worlds greatest literacy work's including 38 plays, 154 sonnets and numerous poems, which have subsequently been translated into every major language and have led him to become the most famous playwright of all time (and the cause of headaches for many an English student). In celebration of his Birthday you could revisit some of his greatest works (frolic with the fairies in A Midsummer Nights Dream, witness tragedy unfold for star crossed lovers in Romeo and Juliet) or you could rediscover the English language and the power of the written word for yourself. In the age of text messages, twitter and Facebook, communication has undoubtly become quicker but much less personal. Jane Austen’s protagonists agonised over the arrival of the mail coach, awaiting letters containing declarations of love and exploiting scandalous tales. Handwritten letters stir up the kind of anticipation and romantic connotations that could never be achieved in an email (regardless of what Meg Ryan has attempted to lead us to believe...). Furiously tapping away at a computer keyboard seems incredibly corporate, too far removed from emotion in comparison to the whimsicalness of some of the world’s greatest love story’s being instigated at the helm of a quill. Realistically, attempting to handwrite the next epic novel may not be particularly efficient, but putting a pen to paper is the ideal way to scribble a note to your beloved (monogramed stationary and wax seal optional). Where the heart is...

There is something special about Newcastle. Though not a born and bred Geordie, it’s the place I flew the nest to, and the city I’ve fallen for! I challenge anyone else not to do the same... OK, so before you have the chance to forget. Sunday is Mother’s Day. So there you have it, obliviousness is no longer an excuse! But don’t panic, keep calm and read on, because as always help and advice is on hand.

Top o’ the mornin’ to you. Time to get practising that Irish accent as March (and supposedly spring...!) has arrived bringing with it St Patricks day. Named after the patron saint of Ireland the 17^th March has distanced itself from its origins within Catholicism and become a notorious celebration of Irish culture. Today the festivities far transcend the boundaries of the Emerald isle with events taking place all over the world, as the perfect opportunity for the Irish (and their descendants) to be patriotic and take pride in their roots.

Unfortunately, I am one who can only dream of an Irish heritage, but that wont stop me joining in the revelry and celebrating the country that unleashed Westlife upon the world (OK, not such a convincing argument). But, before I carried away in the leprechaun madness I felt it was only right that we take a moment to appreciate Irish silver. As one of the most popular and collectable forms of silver, items are characterised by the crowned harp hallmark. Dating back to 1498 sterling silver was originally assayed through five offices however, today only Dublin remains open.

After all, it can make or break a career. Get it right and that dress will catapult you to superstardom (See Liz Hurley!). Get it wrong, and watch the tabloid vulture’s descend. As someone who is always on the hunt for an excuse to celebrate, I couldn’t be more thrilled as a dreary January trundles in February to welcome in Chinese New Year. Over a fortnight of feasts, gifts and fireworks? Oh go on then! The perfect antidote to lift us from the winter gloom!

Based on the Chinese Lunar Calendar the origins of the Chinese New Year stem from ancient myths and traditions, revolving around sixty year cycles rather than centuries.

So as I consider adopting the Lunar Calendar I think about all the things we have to thank the East for. Aside from Crispy Duck, Chicken Fried Rice and Prawn Crackers, traditional Chinese Art is unique and instantly recognisable with its iconic style .

Chinese silver is distinctive as it is usually exquisitely decorated with symbols that have cultural connotations including dragons, birds, landscapes, human figures and flowers or bamboo. Originally such silver was made to order for Western visitors to Hong Kong and Shanghai rather than for the local market.

Hallmarks.

As in the cards…?

No, the markings on silver that provide information regarding the origins of the piece (Honestly, this is a silver blog, what were you expecting?!)

Sounds intriguing…

You don’t know the half of it….Hallmarks were first introduced in Britain in the fourteenth century as a one of the earliest forms of customer protection, providing assurance for the quality of silver pieces by testing that the metal included a high enough silver content (Silver itself is actually a very soft metal and is generally alloyed with copper to strengthen it making it more suitable for use). Today Hallmarking is a legal requirement of precious metals in the UK and the Birmingham Assay office which was established to encourage the silver trade to prosper remains the largest Assay office in the world. As collectors will know they are an invaluable source of information. The majority of Antique pieces have Hallmarks that comprise of four compulsory marks*.

All very nice, but how do you actually know what each mark represents?

Well, since you asked…

• The makers mark (A)
Does what it says on the tin- this shows who made the piece, identified by an initial.

• The assay mark (B & G)
This identifies where the item was quality tested. Today, only four Assay offices remain in operation in the UK- Birmingham, London, Sheffield and Edinburgh. However, Newcastle, Norwich, York, Glasgow, Exeter and Chester have previously also had Assay offices.

• The sterling mark (C &F)
This confirms that the piece has .925 silver content. For pieces Assayed in England this is depicted by a Lion Passant (A lion shown from the side).

• The date letter (D)
This is a letter which denotes the year in which the item was assayed. The font of the letter changes as the alphabet is repeated.

• The duty mark ( E)
Hallmarks on items produced between December 1894 and April 1890 will contain the monarchs head. This shows that duty has been paid on the item.

It’s set to be the wedding of the year, if not the decade, and as we sit here very patiently waiting for our invite to arrive in the post (fingers crossed it’ll be any day now…) the speculation surrounding the Royal Wedding is growing to fever pitch. I thought we should spare a moment for the rock that sealed the deal.

The ring comprises of an Oval cut true blue Sapphire, surrounded by fifteen diamonds in a cluster setting with an 18 Carat white gold band. In short, a ring worth waiting eight years for!

The unique lustre of the pearl is dependent on the reflection, refraction and diffraction of light from the translucent layers formed within the pearl. The thinner and more numerous the layers in the pearl, the finer the quality of lustre.

The colour of a naturally produced, coloured pearl depends on the variety of mollusc and its environment.

Caring For Your Pearls

Pearls are organic and are sensitive to heat and alcohol in cosmetics and detergents.

To preserve the natural lustre and nacre (surface) of pearls, they should be cleaned gently after being worn against the skin.

Pearls should be stored in acid-free tissue paper - materials such as plastic should not be used to protect pearls as condensation within a plastic bag may damage the pearl's surface.

Holding its own among the world's precious gemstones is the pearl.

Every pearl is unique in colour, lustre, size and shape. One element however sets pearls aside from other gemstones: The pearl is created naturally by a living organism, developed within the shell or mollusc. The pearl itself is the mollusc's natural defence system which creates a protective physical barrier against irritation or damage occuring within the shell.

Modern pearls may now be produced using various methods such as cultured pearl farms which artificially create the reaction within an oyster to produce a pearl. Cultured pearls are becoming increasingly relevant as the number of natural pearls decreases.

The ideal and most valuable pearl shape is perfectly spherical. Pearls however, are produced in various shapes such as round, semi-round, button, drop, pear, oval, baroque and circled - each shape befitting specific pieces of jewellery.

It's All Knives and Forks To Me - Designs

Another variation offered in a canteen of cutlery (or 'flatware' as those in the know call knives, forks etc), is the design or pattern used to embellish the pieces.
Whether your preference is plain, classical or highly decorative, there is a design for everyone.

Old English Pattern - is the simplest design, with pieces displaying a rounded terminal and a single drop to the reverse of the bowl. This design was at its most popular in the mid 18th century.

Fiddle Pattern - Is another popular design, having originated in France. The Fiddle Pattern has a flat, angular terminal, often embellished with shell decoration.

This pattern also has many sub-sctions with pieces displaying varying degrees and styles of decoration to the original shape.

The Fiddle Pattern dominated designs during the late 19th century.

King's Pattern - is also a well recognised design, with a distinctive shell or husk motif to the shaped terminal in addition to scroll and thread decoration to the stem.

Kings pattern is often confused with Queens Pattern, which has a similar shell motif, yet this decoration is 'raised' in relief in the Queens design, whereas the motif in Kings Pattern is 'depressed'! (Simples!)

There are many, many other designs and patterns, but at least this gives you a wee taste of what's available.

Its All Knives And Forks To Me!

Having recently left student life behind, I've progressed from plastic cutlery to more substantial knives, forks and spoons. This has made me realise there a lot more to cutlery than meets the eye.

Initially cutlery was an overt display of wealth and social status. With developments in production methods and access to materials, canteens could be viabley produced.

Traditionally a full canteen consists of twelve place settings, with options of half canteens (for six) or double (for twenty-four persons).

Table and dessert knives, forks and spoons, and teaspoons are the basic components of a canteen set. Optional extras include such pieces as fish servers, ladles and carving knives for example. (Do they make these in plastic??)

There are three principal type of canteen collections:

The straight canteen - where all the pieces have the same decorative pattern, are made by the same maker and have the same date of manufacture.

The composite or mixed canteen - where each piece has the same design, but may be made by different makers with various dates of manufacture.

The eclectic canteen - where the sub-groups are usually the same, but do not necessarily match other groups.

Who thought canteens could be quite so variable - they're not just a collection of knives and forks after all!

It's Not All Black And White In The Diamond Business

To the uninformed, it may be assumed that the 'diamond business' is a 'black and white' trade, in that diamonds may be percieved as 'good' if they are white in colour, and 'poor' if they deviate from anything but the 'white' standard.

This however, is an unsupported assumption. Like other gemstones such as sapphires and opals, natural diamonds may display a variation in colour, ranging from red to green, and yellow to pink, with a multitude of hues between. this colour is influenced by the interaction of naturally occurring chemicals and the boron atoms contained in diamonds.

True coloured diamonds are extremely rare - of the millions of diamonds mined, only twenty stones have ever been certified red, making this the rarest diamond category!

The most famous and largest blue diamond is the 'Hope Diamond', said to have been discovered in the 1660's by Jean Baptiste Tavernier in India. The original 115ct diamond was purchased by King louis XV of France and cut by the court jeweller into a 67ct stone.

After a colourful history - 'scuse the pun - this diamond was donated in 1958 to the Smithsonian Institution, America's national educational facility.

Wedding Rings - Traditional, Tedious or Time For Change?

There are many traditions within our society, and one which is often questioned is why do people wear wedding rings?

It is assumed the exchange of wedding rings is the natural progression following betrothal and the wedding ceremony.

During the Roman era, betrothal and/or nuptial rings were used as a symbol of ownership and wealth.

A common feature seen across many cultures including West Bengal and India for instance, women are expected to wear an 'ioha' and iron bangle to symbolise their marital status.

Research show however, the wedding ring is not all about ownership and obedience. In French speaking countries, the wedding ring is designed in three interwoven strands which symbolise 'Faith, Love and Hope'. Another traditional design, is the Celtic knot, a symbol of 'oneness and continuity', a very romantic notion.

Opal - October's Birthstone

Almost 95% of opals originate in deserts of Australia - with the remaining 5% from Brazil, Mexico and Nevada.

The name 'opal' is derived from the Greek word 'opallios', which may be translated as 'colour change'.

Opals may be found in a range of colours, the most desirable being the black opal (which may be dark blue or dark green infact), closely followed by the creamy white when it displays colour flashes or schillers.

No other gemstone has such a continually changing display of fire and colour (opalescence), and it is this that affects the price of any opal.

Silver Decoration

As website administrator I regularly upload items of silver described as having 'chased, embossed or engraved decoration' - so what does that mean?

Chased decoration is achieved by the use of steel punches and hammers to indent or push the silver into differnt patterns, as opposed to engraved decoration, where metal is carved or removed.

Embossed decoration, also referred to as repousse or chasing in relief, is accomplished by hammering the back side of an item to provide the basic simple shape, with further detail and definition achieved by chasing to achieve the desired effect.

Finally, engraved decoration is perhaps what it says on the tin, in that an engraver would use a tool called a graver to remove a small amount of silver from the surface of an object. Ostensibly engraving was freehand, enabling the engraver to customise items with not only decoration but monograms, crests, coats of arms and inscriptions.

The origin(s) of the word peridot is uncertain. Some sources state the word is derived from the Arabic word faridat meaning 'gem'. Other sources suggest the word originates from the Anglo-Norman pedoretes, which describes a type of opal.

What isn't open to discussion is the fact that the peridot, a variety of chysolite or olivine minerals, only occurs in the colour green - the hue dependent upon the degree of iron in the basic crystal structure. (Occasionally, peridots may be inadvertently mistaken as emeralds).

Ruby - The July Birthstone

The mineral corundum is colourless, yet traces of elements such as chrome, iron, titanium or vanadium create a multi-coloured spectrum of gems, ruby being the red variety.

The name ruby is derived from the Latin 'rubens' meaning red.

The 'Burmese Rubies' are so called because gems with a deep rich red hue are of the colour of those mined in Burma, and these are the highest quality stones.

An Interesting and Collectable Antique George V English Sterling Silver Napkin Ring

A recent addition to the AC Silver inventory is an individual 1930's boxed napkin ring embellished with an enamel pennant and an inscription (see images).

To cut a long story short, Mudhook Yacht Club still exists on the north shore of the Firth of Clyde, and is one of the oldest yacht clubs in Great Britain. It's a fairly select yacht club, permitting only forty members.

'Mudhook' is sailor's slan for an anchor, as seen on the pennant - I wonder if it was a considered decision to have the napkin ring assayed in Birmingham........with the anchor as the recognised assay office hallmark!!!

Pearls are formed in live seawater oysters or freshwater mussels.

When a foreign object (bone, shell or coral for example) becomes lodged within the shell the oyster/mussel coats the irritant with a substance called nacre (crystals of calcium carbonate).
The nacre reflects and refracts light, producing the unique rainbow-like sheen.

Individual pearls differ in colour depending on mollusc type, and local influences such as water temperature, pollutants and diet, and it takes an expert eye and patience to carefully 'match' pearls when setting in an item of jewellery.

On 12 May 2009 the rare blue Cullinan mine diamond was sold at Sotherby's Auction in Geneva for £6.2 million ($9.5m), to an anonymous buyer.

WOW!

How long can anyone wearing a £6.2m diamond ring remain anonymous/inconspicuous?? Alas, methinks the ring will never be won in public, if ever worn at all - that has to be a travesty.

Rare Blue Diamond on Display - not at ACSilver unfortunately

Wow! Some diamond or what!?

On 27 April 2009 Sotherby's, London displayed the cushion cut 7.03ct blue diamond worth between an estimated 4 and six million pounds (GBP).

This gem of a gem, which was discovered last year in South Africa in the most famous mine in the world, the Cullinan Mine, will be auctioned in Geneva in May 2009 (watch this blog...).

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has graded the diamond as flawless in clarity - the highest ranking a diamond can achieve, and blue in colour - an exceptionally rare colour.

We wait to see who will purchase this stone, but the lucky, (or just plain rich), buyer has the added priviledge of naming the diamond.

March Birthstone - Bloodstone (or aquamarine??)

To my dismay, I could find no 'bloodstone' items in the AC Silver stock to use for illustration purposes.
On further investigation however, I was very relieved to find a get out clause when I discovered that in 1912, in an effort to standardise birthstones, the American national association of jewelers, Jewelers of America, created a recognised 'Modern List' of stones. This list has become the most widely used list in the United States, Australia and Thailand.

The March birthstone identified in this list is aquamarine! Ah ha - I'm off the hook!!

February Birthstone - Amethyst

Amethyst is a violet, purple or mauve variety of quartz and as such is related to citrine which is the yellow form of quartz.
It's colouration comes from iron and aluminium impurities.

Its name derives from the Greek word amethystos which may be translated as 'sober or not intoxicated' (!)

Who first hid a silver sixpence in the Christmas Pudding?

The tradition of putting a silver coin in the Christmas pudding may have originted in Roman times when charms were hidden in food during Saturnailia, when the god Saturn was celebrated as the god of agriculture.

In Britain, silver threepences or silver sixpenses were added to the pudding on the last Sunday before Advent, when it was traditional for the whole family to take turns in stirring in the ingredients.
Once the pudding was served on Christmas Day, the finder of the sixpence could keep the coin, which was deemed to be a symbol of wealth for the coming year.

Other tokens used have been a tiny wishbone, to bestow good luck, a silver thimble for thrift or an anchor to symbolise safe harbour.

A Fine and Impressive Claret Jug

Claret is a term used today when referring to red wine produced in the Bordeaux region of France.

In the Middle Ages, when South-West France was ruled by the English, claret was a wine flavoured with spices such as anise, cinnamon, fennel, caraway and cardamom.

To prevent sediment form being poured from the bottom of the bottle into the wine glass, claret was decanted into a pouring vessel, latterly refered to as a claret jug.

In Sept 2008, The Independent reported that claret was enjoying a revival in the UK, and sales were booming.

Perhaps a fine claret, served from an elegant claret jug would add that extra special something to this year's Christmas table........

One aspect of website updating is that I often learn new things. They're not necessarily mind-blowing, life-changing 'things', but just new, and I love the opportunity to relate the antiques I'm describing to present day.

One of my recent "Oh that's SO obvious!" discoveries relates to sugar.............

Caster/castor sugar is so called because it is sugar ground finely enough to be shaken from a sugar caster (as opposed to granulated sugar which is more corsely ground) - duh! SO obvious!

Well, what did you think the derivation of 'caster' sugar was......??

Having uploaded several different pieces to the acsilver website, I wondered why I considered some items to be more beautiful than others. Moreover, what does beauty mean?

According to Roget's Thesaurus beauty is synonymous with adorableness, artistry, attraction, charm, delicacy, elegance, lovliness, style...................I could go on.

To me, beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder. Beauty is a subjective perception that make us 'feel good' when we use either just one or all of our senses, sight, smell, taste, touch and hearing to appreciate the subject of our attention.

Because beauty is completely open to personal interpretation, perhaps I should be content with being able to recognise beauty when I see it, and enjoy the moment of appreciation.

In a world that is sometimes too busy and too critical to stop and acknowledge that moment of admiration, beauty is too easily overlooked and an opportunity to 'feel good' missed.

What is the connection between a Dutch incense burner and Sir Archibald Campbell? AND who are 'C & M'?

This Dutch incense burner has the inscription:

'To Sir Archibald and Lady Campbell of Blythswood from C & M. 1864 - 1889'

Research has revealed Lieutenant-Colonel Archibald Campbell, 1st Baron of Blythswood was married Honorable Augusta Clementina Carrington in 1864. They lived at Blythswood House on the Ranfield Estate, Renfrewshire.
In 1880 Archibald Campbell was created Baronet Campbell of Blythswood, later becoming Baron Campbell in 1892. From 1894, Campbell was aide-de-camp to Queen Victoria and King Edward VII.

So who would present Sir Archibald Campbell with a Dutch incense burner? C and M obviously, but I'm intrigued as to who they were...........as yet, this tale remains unfinished.

If you ever thought an engraved coat of arms was just for decorative purposes, think again and read on!

Research often reveals a story otherwise unknown and easily overlooked. Take for instance this coat of arms depicted on a George III salver made in London in 1774.

The images to the left of this shield (actual heraldic right, or dexter) denote the arms of the husband, in this case Thomas Cholmondeley, and to the right when viewing (heraldic left, or sinister), the arms of the wife, Dorothy Cowper.
Below the escutcheon the Cholmondeley motto 'Cassis Tutissima Vertus' (Virtue is the safest helmet) is inscribed.

Thomas Campbell, MP for Cheshire married Dorothy in 1764, and the above coat of arms depicts the marshalling (combining) of two coats of arms pertaining to each family in one shield.

Who'd have thought that what was once a family piece of silver would be viewed on the world wide web almost 250 years later and still have a story of ownership to tell!

When is a diamond not a diamond?

It could be said that a diamond is not a diamond when it's an emerald - but that doesn't hold if one is talking about an emerald cut diamond.

An emerald cut diamond is either square or rectangular in shape.

It differs from a princess cut diamond in that the emerald cut has tapered corners and the pavillion (underside) has a faceted cut. A princess cut diamond has sharp corners.

The asscher cut diamond is nearly identical to the emerald cut except that it is square and has a typically greater total depth.

So next time you look at a rectangular diamond, look a little more closely and decide if the stone is a princess, asscher or an EMERALD cut!
