Garnet is the birthstone associated with the month of January.
The word garnet is derived from either the Greek word 'granatum' (pomegranate seed) or the Latin word 'granatus (grain).
There are several varieties of garnets with less well known colour properties such as:
Bohemian: deep red
Cinnamon: orange hue
Grossular: green hue
Almandine (aka: oriental garnet, armaldine ruby, carbuncle): violet hue
